Lunch Cast – Sony FDR-AX100 4k Camcorder Review

SonyFDRAX100I have purchased my new Sony FDR-AX100 4k camcorder from Best Buy.  They had one too look at on the shelf, but it wouldn’t power on.  I decided to buy one and test it out myself.  I found out that it didn’t come with any memory card.  Knowing that 4k video will require a fast SD card, I decided to get the San Disk Extreme Pro SD HCI rated at 95MB/s.  I also wanted an extra battery and external charger.  The camera does have an AC power adapter that plugs into the camera and charges the battery while attached to the camera.  It will also power up the camera without a battery using the AC adapter.

I plugged in the AC adapter to the camera and had the battery plugged into the camera.  I powered on the camera and the menu came up on screen and started a configuration wizard.  Setting Date and Time.  It also found my WiFi access point and I was able to join it using the 802.11n connection.  Once the wizard completed, I got an error message on screen: This memory card does not support recording of XAVC S movies.  I was very disappointed.  I called Best Buy and they looked it up and found out that it requires a SDXC Card Class 10.  I have done a search on SDXC cards and found that the speeds range from 10Mb/s to 95Mb/s.  I am not sure if any of them will work, or if the rating needs to be over 60Mb/s due to the bandwidth requirements of 4k.

Using the SD HCI card, I am able to record in AVCHD 1080p 60p.  I did find that it only supports 1080 60i, 60p or 24 fps. I didn’t see 30i or 30p.  Just doesn’t make any sense that it would be missing, so I am guessing there is another setting that will allow this.
