Welcome to David and Johns BLOG

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

We have decided to use WordPress as our blog server.  We have found many features that fit our needs with this server.  We would like to invite you to look at all the features of this site and post your comments.  Our main goal here is to provide users with solid information on how to build a home theater, and where to get answers to your questions on the equipment and what you should look for before investing your hard earned cash.

David Kull is a computer network specialist.  He has had over 20 years experience working in the computer industry.  He has a business, called Kull’s Computer Service.  He is currently supporting the inland empire in San Bernardino and is looking to expand his business expertise into the Home Theater market.  Currently, his website can be found at http://dkull1234.googlepages.com/kullscomputerservice

John Harris is currently working on building his first Dome Home.  He has attending a 5 day hands on workshop on building a dome home, and was given permission to video tape the course.  He is working puting together a website with his footage.  You can check out his progess at http://mobilemediacenter.servegame.com

How to choose a HD TV

Monday, August 11th, 2008

The old TV is out -- or is it.  With the new HD TV service growing in the number of available channels to watch, we will be enticed to move to HD TV.  Right now most video broadcasted in HD will come across in 720I format.  The highest format is 1080p.  You will want to buy a TV that is capable of viewing all the formats, as long as it fits in your price range.  The 6 HD formats are 480I / 480P, 720I / 720P, 1080I / 1080P.  The I stands for Interlaced Video, the P stands for Progressive Video.

HDMI -- The best connection to support all the formats, and includes Audio.  You will want a TV that has at least one HDMI port on it.  Devices such as the Blue Ray and HD dvd players use either HDMI and / or Component Video cables.

The playstation 3 does have a HDMI output port, capable of playing blue ray movies at the Highest resoultion, 1080p.

You will want to look at the Native resolution that the TV supports. There are a lot of tv’s that only do 720p native, but can display 1080i / p.  They do this buy compressing the video down to the 720p size.  This may be acceptable by most people, as it is hard to tell the difference, unless you have 2 tv’s side by side to compare.

To be continued….

Cables that get hooked up to the TV:

Componet Video

Davids Home Theater

Monday, August 11th, 2008

David has been working with John on designing a home theater that would use a PC as the main Server in the Home Theater.  Since then, they have discoverd devices like the Hava and Sling player that gives you access to your recorded media anywhere on the internet.  In looking into the types of media that you could broadcast on the internet, they have Discovered Adobes media server.  Being able to stream video in high Definition was one of the features they were looking for.  Converting your DVD’s to MP4 format, you could acheive high quality viewing with a Flash Media player app.  In the process, they also have purchased the Panasonic HDC1 High Definition video camera.  Learning that the video camera stores video in AVCHD format, they needed an application to convert this media into either MP4 or DVD MP2 format to be able to view the videos online.

Nero video provided a great solution to the conversion process.  Sony Vegas 8 Pro also allows editing of the AVCHD footage.  Dissapointed, Adobe is not currently supporting the AVCHD format, even though it was promised to be out in a future release of there software suite.

We have come a long ways in discovering what it takes to do high definition on the internet.

Sony’s Playstation 3 seems to be the easiest solution, though not complete in the media center.
Hava is a great way to record HD TV with the Componet cables (un-encoded video).
