Mammoth and Lake Tahoe Aerial Shots with the DJI Phantom and GoPro Hero HD Camera FPV

Friday, June 21 2013, we have arrived at Mammoth Mountain.  Went on up to the Devils Postpille.  Traveling down a two way road wide enough for one car we have arrived our destination.  Packed up the back pack and hiked in.  I was able to capture the mountain side, craters, lakes, streams and even the San Andreas earthquake fault.  I think the crater was the hardest area to fly, as you loose the depth perception once you are flying over the center of the crater.  Loosing my sense of direction, I was about ready to hit the fail safe button on the remote, but decide to press on.  Once I was realized that the wind was a major factor on what caused me to loose my sense of direction, I was able to continue my flight with a a big relief and my panic state had subsided. I wonder what would have happened if I did flip the switch to trigger the fail safe mode.  Would the GPS mode work correctly and return the Phantom back to where I took off from, or would it land in the center of the crater?  I am glad I didn’t find out the hard way.

This 15 minute clip is a compilation of 7 flights and some shots with my Canon Vixia HF R40 Camera(1080p 30fps).  The in car camera is a GoPro Hero HD(720p 120 fps wide fov).  The camera on the DJI Phantom Quad Copter is a GoPro Hero HD 3 Black Edition (1080p 60 fps narrow fov).  I am using iMovie to edit the footage.  I am still looking for music that I can add to the video without youtube taking it down.

Overall, I am very happy with the turn out of the videos.  I know I can get better footage from the Quad Copter if I were to purchase a gimbal for it.  The one that I have my eyes on is designed by DJI and is made for the Phantom and GoPro Hero Black Edition Camera.  It features video stabilization, vibration reduction, and in the future transmits video and OSD back to the controller or mobile device.

This time you get to see some fast moving trips up and down the street, with people watching. I also get a shot of a flag and some tree shots. I have put the camera on the original mount and I am using the underwater case that came with the GoPro. I notice less jello and the fish eye is almost gone. I think I like this shot the best. Today I am headed up to Mammoth Lakes and will be taking video over Devils Post Pile. Should have them posted by Monday. See you then.

June 19 Narrow FOV over SB

Today I decided to use the Narrow FOV Setting on the GoPro Hero 3 B.E. Camera. I actually like the fact that the Fish Eye look has drastically been reduced. However, the Jello Effect is a little noticeable when the wind picks up. The other problem was that the video stopped recording mid flight. I was able to get about 6.5 minutes out of 10 before it stopped. I am using the San Disk 32gb micro sd card from Costco, Class 10. I am guessing that it could not keep up with the required bandwidth to continue recording. I also have done the latest firmware update on the camera. This can be really disappointing when filming a once in a lifetime clip.

I decided to try night flying with the quad copter. I kept the settings on the camera the same as the previous video, which is 1080p, 60fps, protune, medium fov. It came out better than expected. Let me know what you think.

For fathers day we went to visit friends in Highland on our way to my parents in Yucaipa. I decided to show them the DJI Phantom Quad Copter and how the GoPro Hero3 B.E. Camera gets mounted on the Quad Copter. Using the modified mount that I made, I was able to take more video in the vertical mode. Using the 1080p 60fps Protune Medium FOV settings, I was up and way.

DJI Phantom with GoPro Hero 3 FPV 1080p 60 fps medium straight down shot Aerial view

The goal of this video is to show how video filmed from the GoPro Hero 3 mounted to the DJI Phantom Quad Copter would look. I created the extended mount for the camera with InstaMorph Moldable Plastic. The gave me the needed clearance to mount the camera flat on the Quad Copter. It also helped dampen the vibrations created by the Quad Copter. This reduces the Jello effect seen on some videos. I had the use the Medium field of view with the shot to remove the landing gear from the video. My next project will be using this shot over the Code Red Park. Shots over trees and over troops uncovering themselves from the ground. If all goes well, I will be able to enter the footage into the next Film Festival. Stay tuned for more details, as I will be posting them here on this channel and on my website, listed below.

Big Bear Lake Aerial footage with the DJI Phantom and GOPRO Hero HD camera – FPV

We went for a two day visit to Big Bear Lake. One of my main objectives was to get aerial footage over the lake. To my dismay, I left my GoPro Hero 3 Camera at home by the computer. Fortunately, I had my original GoPro Hero HD camera with me. I was able to attach it to the DJI Phantom and used the 720p, 120fps settings to shoot some video. After editing the footage, I was pleased with the video that I have uploaded for you to enjoy. Let me know what you think and be sure to like the video.
