Kull Tech Films – Aerial over San Bernardino, DJI Phantom Go Pro

Watch on Youtube

Aerial over San Bernardino, CA.
4 flights, and two of my batteries only gave me 3 minutes of flight time. Ouch. Normally I get 10 minutes. I decided to make this a quick 4 second per clip video. Hope you enjoy.

I am still looking for locations to fly. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Kull Tech Films – 4K UHD Objects Fly in Front of the Moon FDR-AX100

Monday, April 14th, 2014

Watch on Youtube

I wanted to test the Sony FDR-AX100 filming the moon. I set the camera up on a tripod. I set the zoom to max (160x Digital) and noticed that the moon would move out the viewing area in about 2 minutes. When I decided to edit the video, I was somewhat disappointed with the amount of “Noise” in the video. I decided to watch it all the way through and that when I noticed object flying in front of the moon.

Do you think it is space junk, meteors, or asteroids or satellites?

Kull Tech Films – NAB 2014 Las Vegas in 4K UHD Sony FDR-AX100

Saturday, April 12th, 2014

Watch on Youtube.com

This Video has quick segments of what I saw at the NAB 2014 convention in Las Vegas.  It was shot in Ultra HD 4K Video with the Sony FDR-AX100 Camera.  There are a few segments with conversations with the vendors.  The theme of this conference seems to be Video in 4K.  Whether it is camera, displays or transport mediums, most of this technology is in its infancy stage.  The fact that Youtube allows you to watch 4K video streamed to your PC or TV is very amazing and allows me to share you this video.  Be sure to choose the 4k video option on the youtube player to get the best quality. Sony Vegas Pro 12 – Trial – Full function with watermark when rendering out video
Adobe Premier – Trial – Full Function – Watermark unknown – not tested
iMovie – Free – Will edit 4k video, but will render out as 1080p Max. Final Cut Pro will Render out as 4k
All software will proxy the video and allow you to scrub video without conversion of any kind. I did notice that Sony Vegas will create a proxy video when importing media. Very fast.
Tested on Mac Book Pro Retina and Mac Mini with iMovie – Scrub stutters, but is useable. Playback with Quicktime may stutter at first, but then plays back smoothly.
Tested on Windows 8.1 Lenovo A7 – All in one pc with 6gb ram. Slow due to 5400 rpm drive, but it does work and is somewhat useable.
Tested on Windows 8.1 Dell 720 4gb ram – Slow to scrub and edit, but useable. Playback works with built in software to windows 8.1
Video uploaded to Youtube in 4k mode plays back smoothly with high speed internet (2mb or faster). Tested on 80mb FIOS and 1GB AT&T Fiber.
When selecting 4k video on youtube, the player will allow you to view it in scaled mode on your 1080p monitor.
Sony Vegas Pro 12 – Render as MainConcept AVC/AAC (*.mp4;*.avc)
Choose Sony Tablet 1080p, Click Customize Template, Give it a new name – YOUTUBE 4K, Include Video, Width 3840 Height 2160
Pixel aspect ration 1.0, Number of reference frames 2, Constant Bit rate, 50mb, Render cpu only, Audio 48k, bit rate 512k

Lunch Cast – Sony FDR-AX100 4k Camcorder Review

Tuesday, April 1st, 2014

SonyFDRAX100I have purchased my new Sony FDR-AX100 4k camcorder from Best Buy.  They had one too look at on the shelf, but it wouldn’t power on.  I decided to buy one and test it out myself.  I found out that it didn’t come with any memory card.  Knowing that 4k video will require a fast SD card, I decided to get the San Disk Extreme Pro SD HCI rated at 95MB/s.  I also wanted an extra battery and external charger.  The camera does have an AC power adapter that plugs into the camera and charges the battery while attached to the camera.  It will also power up the camera without a battery using the AC adapter.

I plugged in the AC adapter to the camera and had the battery plugged into the camera.  I powered on the camera and the menu came up on screen and started a configuration wizard.  Setting Date and Time.  It also found my WiFi access point and I was able to join it using the 802.11n connection.  Once the wizard completed, I got an error message on screen: This memory card does not support recording of XAVC S movies.  I was very disappointed.  I called Best Buy and they looked it up and found out that it requires a SDXC Card Class 10.  I have done a search on SDXC cards and found that the speeds range from 10Mb/s to 95Mb/s.  I am not sure if any of them will work, or if the rating needs to be over 60Mb/s due to the bandwidth requirements of 4k.

Using the SD HCI card, I am able to record in AVCHD 1080p 60p.  I did find that it only supports 1080 60i, 60p or 24 fps. I didn’t see 30i or 30p.  Just doesn’t make any sense that it would be missing, so I am guessing there is another setting that will allow this.
