Lunch Cast – City of Rialto Christmas Parade 2016 – Aerial Coverage

Streamed live on Dec 10, 2016

This was streamed live, downtown Rialto, CA. The goal of the was to test video streaming, get a birds eye view that could be used later when the video is edited together.
The Video was streamed over Verizon’s LTE Cellular service. The connection went from the Phantom over WiFI at 720p, to an iPad, which was tethered to an iPhone 7 Hotspot. (Click more to continue reading)
I discovered some problems along the way.
1). The Phantom came with a 16gb card, capable of recording for 30 minutes of 4k video.
2). I purchased a 64gb card that is capable of doing 2 hours.
3). I planned on using the 64gb card, but forgot to swap it out before the flight.
4). I started the stream to YouTube around 9:50, 10 minutes before the start time of the parade.
5). I didn”t hit record as I didn’t want to record the dead time. This was a big mistake, as I never recorded the video due to the anticipation of when the parade would start. (20 minutes later than scheduled)
6). I learned that the streaming only drained the battery of the Phantom by 10% for about 25 minutes of streaming – no flight time.
7). If I would have began recording I would have seen the time remaining start counting down.
8). After landing, I should have hit the stop button on the recording, but I just removed the battery and swapped it out. This could have caused the recording to be lost as it would not have close the file properly.

I was fortunate that the streaming to YouTube was automatically saved after the stream completed. This gave me a 720p copy of the event.
Another thing I was worried about after the event ended was that YouTube could have taken the video down due to copyright violations (music played during the event).
I didn’t realize that it would record audio from the iPad while streaming.
I rushed home and went to and downloaded the streamed video that was still on YouTube.

These were some of the main points that I learned from this event.

Even though there are a lot of dead spots, I didn’;t want to start and stop the stream as I feared it would not start back up. There seems to be about a 5 – 10 minute delay in starting the stream.
Hope this information helps. If you have any questions, feel free to comment below. Thank you for watching.
